Jacq On – The Environment
Have you been watching ‘Earthshot’ on TV? Prince William, David Attenborough and many important scientists are telling us that the next ten years are vital. That is if we are to turn around our increased pressure on fragile eco-systems as a result of global warming.
Yet if we all ‘do our bit’ ...
* As a church what can we do?
We can build on the fact that we are a Fairtrade church. You will begin to notice 100% recycled paper products and 'Ecover' cleaning products appearing in church! Please use them and buy them for church when you can.
* What can I do on a personal level?
The Co-op is now recycling soft plastics (crisp packets and all those annoying plastic food wraps). ‘Milk and More’ deliver milk to your door using returnable glass bottles cutting out plastic bottles - not only milk, but cleaning products too, which is a great saving in plastic. Before you ‘bin it’ think ‘If I clean this, can I recycle it?’
We are asked to cut down on meat products, especially beef. Grazing cows, and the production of grain to feed them, takes up to one sixth of the earth’s arable land. Through digestion processes they contribute to greenhouse gases. They eructate (burp) CO2 into the atmosphere! So try having two meat-free days and a dairy-free day (or equivalent spread over several days) a week.
Carbon footprint prompts me to think, ‘Can I walk instead of driving?’ ‘Can I shop locally?’
Let us pull together to save this beautiful world which is God-given.
